The Smothers Brothers in Concert
A Review
by lyle e davis
Before we get to the Smothers Brothers, of whom most readers of The Paper will be familiar, we must recognize the opening act, Janet Klein and Her Parlor Boys. It was “23 Skiddo!” and “Oh! You Kid!”
A combination of ricky-tick ragtime tunes, jazz, music stylings from 1913 to 1934 had many toes a’tappin’ throughout the entire set. Janet Klein (see photo above) is dressed as a 1920’s flapper, has the affectations of same, and a cute “boop-boopy-do” persona (if you’re not familiar with these terms you are really a young ‘un). She chose her musicians well and the whole opening act was an absolute delight. It put us all in the mood for The Smothers Brothers!
The Smothers Brothers were, well, the Smothers Brothers! The same lovable duo that we have watched on tv over the years.
Dick Smothers playing straight man for brother, Tom. Tom delivering his trademark impish looks and innocent, questioning, responses. When the audience invariably breaks out in laughter he shows the now familiar mischievous smile.
The combination of music, comedy, and a video retrospective of their family and their career highlights all combined for a top notch show.
The California Center for the Arts, Escondido, had a nearly sold out house for this show. Well done! I, and the audience, would love to see more of this calibre of entertainement!
