Why I've Voted 'No' on the past Seven of Eight California Budgets
By Senator Mark Wyland
Since coming to Sacramento, I've voted 'no' on seven of the past eight budgets because they weren't grounded spending plans. Looking back now as we battle a $15.2 billion deficit, it's clear that California has repeatedly failed to spend wisely, and I stand by my votes.
Developing key budget reforms is vital for a healthy California. Two reforms I've authored will give our state the help it needs. The first authorizes the outside auditor to examine each government program to evaluate its effectiveness. The other requires the Legislature every other year focuses only on the budget, leaving the other year for legislation, thus cutting back on the thousands of unnecessary bills yearly passed by the Legislature.
Until we accomplish serious reform, I will continue voting no on irresponsible spending plans, while pushing for budget reforms that Californians deserve.
