The Senator Reports August 7th, 2008

The State Budget Stalemate
By Senator Mark Wyland (R-Carlsbad)

It's a common reaction to blame "lousy politicians" when things go wrong in government. Take, for example, the failure to pass a state budget. Many are quick to point the finger of blame at politicians, assuming that we're not negotiating on behalf of all Californians.

One thing I mention to skeptics is that as long as the California Budget remains unsigned, my staff and I go unpaid. Obviously, as appreciative and proud bosses, it pains us that our staffs are unfairly punished because we have been unable to meet a deadline.

However, it's a fight we can't take lightly. Democrat and Republican leaders have been meeting for weeks, but to no avail. The bottom line: Republicans demand budget reform and Democrats have refused. Until Republicans feel Californians receive the reform that will give them the budget they deserve, we will continue to do what we think is right.

Senator Mark Wyland Senator Mark Wyland represents the people of the 38th Senate District, which includes cities in north San Diego County and the south Orange County cities of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.
