A Marine Fan

Lyle: Once again you hit the mark with the cover story on Mitchell Paige. He was truly an American Hero! I have his G.I. Joe as well as the Ernie Pyle G.I. Joe.

Keep up the great work. The word is starting to spread about "The Paper.” It is truly a community beacon!

Comment on NCTD

After building the 478 million dollar Sprinter, due to lack of funds, the North County Transit District is eliminating and/or reducing schedules for the Breeze buses, as well as Coaster schedules.

Whenever I'm out and about I look and observe the buses practically, if not completely empty, regardless of time of day. I've seen two Sprinters en route and they were also practically empty. While subsidizing public transportation may be a taxpayer's obligation, I'd like to know the monthly cost at five dollars a gallon just for diesel fuel to feed all these practically empty vehicles? Where is the accountability? I ask the public officials who have control, am I missing something?

Maybe I'm the only one concerned?

Three Cheers for Irena!

Lyle—
I read with interest the obituary of Irena Sendlerowa who courageously saved 2500 infants and children from the Nazi’s. It is unfortunate that she was not awarded the Nobel Peace Prize which I believe would have been better in her hands than those of Al Gore.

“The Drug War”

This war is over 30 years old. It has never been waged properly. Its failure begins with weak enforcement of our laws and ineffective punishment for those who commit the crimes. I'm tired of hearing "war on drugs." Let's take out the gangs here and secure the borders.

Mandatory Life terms for U.S. gun-runners.

Your article, 'Just One Marine'

Thanks for the write-up. Hope to see more hero stories of our military such as about Lance Sijan a MOH recepient who died as POW in Vietnam. I was fortunate in knowing Col. Paige. Very warm, modest person. Desired to be called Mitch vs Col. Paige. He told me that he had modified the Browning Machine Gun to make it more efficient.

Readers can learn more about Col. Paige on the site, http://www.homeofheroes.com/mitch/index.html and can purchase his autobiography, 'A Marine Named Mitch' from Sgt. Grit, Inc., PO Box 60119, Oklahoma City, OK, 73146.

Letters to the Editor are always welcome.

Please limit your submission to 250 words. As always, we reserve the right to edit for length, content, and good taste.

We prefer submittals via email. Please send to: thepaper@cox.net but will accept faxed copies and regular mail. If you have an item for The Social Butterfly, you can email that to: TheSocialButterfly@cox.net

Readers are expected to comport themselves at all times as ladies and gentlemen. See as how that’s all that reads The Paper, that should be easy.

We require your name, address, and phone number so we can verify the letter. We will not, however, publish your address or phone number.
