Students Perform with Coastal Communities Concert Band

At the June 8th concert of the Coastal Communities Concert Band in Carlsbad, students from the San Dieguito Union High School District, recommended by their band directors, rehearsed and performed with the Band. Twelve of the students chose to audition for a scholarship to further their musical instruction, attend music camps or purchase music supplies. Following auditions, five were chosen to receive scholarships of $750 each.

Senior Center to Hold Wii Bowling Tournament

The San Marcos Senior Center is having a Wii Bowling Tournament on Thursday, July 10, before lunch in the Discovery Cafe. Wii games are one of the newest ways to help seniors increase physical activity and have fun at the same time. Wii games help with eye-hand coordination and are shown to stimulate the brain and get blood flowing. The senior center has a very large screen TV and participants use a hand held device that they swing just like a bowling ball but without the weight. There is a lot of friendly competition involved and everyone has a great time.

This party will be part of the daily lunch program and that day will be a pizza party. Everyone is encouraged to wear their favorite team shirts and hats. Call the center at 760.744.5535 the day before to reserve your lunch. If you need transportation, call Jerry at Ext 3605. Lunch is served at 11:30am so come in about 10:00 to participate in the tournament. The suggested donation for lunch is $3 for seniors 60 and older, and a fee of $5 is collected from those under 60. All are welcome. The tournament and pizza party is sponsored by Home Instead.

City Manager to Speak at Democratic Club Meeting

Clay Phillips, Escondido City Manager, will be the featured speaker at the Thursday, July 10, meeting of the Escondido Democratic Club. Phillips will explain the budget challenges and discuss how the city is dealing with budget cuts forced by a slow economy and rising costs. The meeting begins at 7pm at the North County Unity campaign office, 135 E. Grand Avenue, Escondido. Admission is free and open to the public. Free parking is available along Grand Avenue or to the rear of the office in a city lot at Kalmia St. and Second Avenue. Assistance League Installs New Officers

Assistance League of Inland North County, a national non-profit organization, recently installed a new president and board of directors for 2008-2009. Last year, members of the chapter gave 23,894 hours of service to Inland North County communities, touching the lives of almost 5,500 children and adults. Still Time to Register Kids for Summer Fun!

The Buena Vista Audubon Nature Center is still taking registrations for the Kids Art and Nature Camp. Camp Ruddy Duck, for ages 5-6, July 14-18, 9:30-11:30am, and Camp Crawdad, for ages 7-9, July 14-18, from 12:30-3pm, at the Nature Center, 2202 South Coast Highway, Oceanside. Hearing Loss Group to Learn About Cochlear Implant

When the Hearing Loss Association meets on Saturday, July 12, at 10am, Bill Klein will relate his experience of losing his hearing and regaining it again with a Cochlear Implant. It is important to know about the Cochlear Implant and how it has changed the lives of many people who are considered deaf. Pretend you cannot hear by muting your TV and looking at the screen. What you see is a picture with no sound. Hearing aids and the Cochlear Implant are the instruments for the hard of hearing to hear again. We invite questions and comments from the audience.

Visitors at the last meeting were Deb McClendon and Brian Dietz, both from Carlsbad. The meetings are held at the Joslyn Senior Center on Park Avenue in Escondido. There will be no meeting in August. For more information, call Sylvia at 760.745.5408.

CWONC Supports Women for Women International

GFWC Contemporary Women of North County (CWONC), a local women's volunteer group, recently participated in "Taste of Humanity," a fundraiser held in Del Mar for the benefit of Women for Women International. Guests enjoyed festive food, wine tasting, live music, silent auction, and raffle opportunities. Over $30,000 was raised and will go directly to the non-profit organization, providing women survivors of war, civil strife and other conflicts, in countries such as the Congo and Afghanistan, with the resources they need to move from crisis and poverty to stability and self-sufficiency.
