The Latest Abuse of the Courts
By Senator Mark Wyland (R-Carlsbad)
The Supreme Court of California recently ruled in favor of same-sex marriages in our state. What is most alarming to me about this situation is that the narrow opinion of four justices has the power to overrule a majority vote of Californians, who have already declared they want to defend traditional marriage, by passing Proposition 22.
Justice Marvin Baxter, who stood in opposition, was right on when he said, "A bare majority of this court, not satisfied with the pace of democratic change, now abruptly forestalls that process and substitutes, by judicial fiat, its own social policy views for those expressed by the People themselves."
I believe that the voice of the people should reign supreme and not be brushed aside to allow the courts to exercise their reoccurring abuse of power. I'm confident that Californians will exercise their supreme power when voting on the issue this November.
Senator Mark Wyland represents the people of the 38th Senate District, which includes cities in north San Diego County and the south Orange County cities of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.
