New Members Welcomed Into DAR

The Rincon Del Diablo chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) recently welcomed two new members who were able to prove their lineage back to a patriot of the American Revolution. They are Michelle Johnson and Jan Compton.

At the National Convention recently, the chapter received first place, the National Chairman's Award, for chapter growth and revitalization. It was the highest award received by a California chapter.

Members can and will help potential members in the process of tracing their ancestors. The chapter has members from Escondido, Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Ramona, Julian, and San Marcos, and meet once a month for lunch and a program which is on some aspect of American history or genealogy research. For information about joining, call Phyllis Young at 760.744.7530 or Mary-Anne McCullough at 760.743.0034.

Boys & Girls Club Teen Selected For Teen Hero Award

Teen member of the San Marcos Boys & Girls Club, Alicia McDowell, has been awarded a Teen Hero Award. Sponsored by Think MTV and the Taco Bell Foundation, 50 stellar teens, including Alicia, were selected amongst hundreds of nominations from across the country. A panel of judges selected the Teen Heroes based on the following criteria: How the teen has made a significant impart or difference in their community, the organization they work with, or to the people they have served - 35%; how the teen has inspired others to be heroes - 35%; and how the teen has shown unique leadership qualities through their volunteer efforts - 30%.
As a youth member for over 10 years, the Club has made an impact on Alicia's life through the Keystone Leadership Club, College & Career Prep, and the unwavering support and care from dedicated staff members. Through challenging life circumstances, including the incarceration of her father at a young age and being raised by a single mother of four children, Alicia has always risen to the occasion and excelled to be the best. As an Advanced Placement student at Mission Hills High School, she will attend Xavier University in the fall. Alicia is a positive role model and leader to all youth.

As a part of her award, Alicia will receive $5,000 from the Taco Bell Foundation to donate to the charity of her choice. She has selected a charity that she refers to as her “second home,” the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos. Alicia and the Club would like to challenge individuals and local businesses to match the $5,000 in her honor to further support the Club's efforts.

A reception honoring Alicia will be held on Wednesday, May 28, from 4:30-5:30pm at the Teen Center of the Boys & Girls Club of San Marcos, 1 Positive Place. For more information, contact Melissa Gillie at 760.471.2490, Ext. 310.
