The Budget Process - May Revise (Part 1 of 2)
By Senator Mark Wyland (R-Carlsbad)
Each year, the Governor and the Legislature works together to adopt the California Budget. The process begins in January and the Legislature must vote on a "balanced" budget by midnight on June 15th (side note: last year I stood with my Senate Republican colleagues to oppose a budget that has since lead California to a $16 - $20 billion deficit).
The process works like this: on or before January 10th, the Governor must put forward his initial budget proposal. After the state collects April tax revenues, the Governor revises his initial budget proposal in mid-May-known as the "May Revise." Then, legislators collaborate to pass a budget, which must receive Governor's approval.
This year's May revision took place on May 14th. I'm interested to see what sort of changes the Governor has made since January. See "Part 2 of 2" next week for my reaction to the Governor's May Revise.
Senator Mark Wyland represents the people of the 38th Senate District, which includes cities in north San Diego County and the south Orange County cities of San Clemente and San Juan Capistrano.
