Saving the CalVet Home Loan Program

As Senate Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman, I recently authored legislation that would authorize $900 million in bonds to provide for the continuation of the CalVet Home Loan program. The legislation comes at a time when the program is running out of funding and would have to turn veterans away as early as 2010.

The CalVet Home Loan program helps veterans and active duty personnel achieve the American Dream of homeownership by making low-interest financing available to them. Benefiting more than 407,000 veterans since its establishment, California voters have approved the self-funding bonds 26 times.

I'm proud to say that the Legislature saw past party-lines and approved my measure that saves this vital program. I know come November, we will again garner voter support to keep the CalVet Home Loan program up and running for our veterans, who have fought hard to protect our country and our freedoms.
