Garrick Bill Would Hold Schools Harmless from Loss of Funding Due to Fires
The California State Assembly passed Assembly Bill 1893, authored by Assemblyman Martin Garrick, during a recent Assembly Floor Session. AB 1893 is modeled after previous legislation signed by the Governor after the 2004 wildfires. The bill will hold school districts harmless from lost funding due to displaced students and the closure of schools caused by the fires.
“I am honored to have authored legislation that will help ensure that our school districts receive critical school funding, especially during these tough budget times,” said Assemblyman Martin Garrick.
Specifically, AB 1893 allows for school districts to claim Class Size Reduction funding based on previous enrollment figures and holds school districts harmless from exceeding the Class Size Reduction cap if they absorbed displaced students.
“This bill is simply a matter of fairness. Without it, districts across Southern California could potentially lose a substantial amount of money through no fault of their own,” added Garrick.
The bill passed the Assembly on a 78-0 vote and Assemblyman Garrick requested the bill to be immediately transmitted to the State Senate for consideration.
Assemblyman Martin Garrick serves the communities of Carlsbad, Del Mar, Solana Beach, Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, San Marcos, Vista, and portions of San Diego, Escondido and Oceanside as the Assemblyman for the 74th District.
