Helping Students Understand America's Pledge of Allegiance
By Senator Mark Wyland (R-Carlsbad)
As one of three measures to improve civics education in public schools, last week I presented legislation in the Senate Education Committee that would require students at public elementary and secondary schools to study and understand the meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance as part of students' history and social science studies.
It's important that students understand the importance of the Pledge as an expression of patriotism, love of country and pride in the United States. Understanding the meaning behind the words in the Pledge of Allegiance is a simple way to increase student awareness of what it means to be an American.
I'm pleased the committee approved my legislation in a bi-partisan, unanimous vote. I look forward to moving this measure along in the process and making this important concept a law to benefit our kids.
