Escondido Woman's Club Fashion Show
a Big Hit
Billed as "It's the Cat's Meow", it was that and more! The fashion show put on by the Woman's Club of Escondido recently, with fashions by Draper's & Damon's, was a very successful event, with table decorations of home-made stuffed cats, favors with cat designs, and even some of the many door prizes were cat figurines and cat tea cups. For those of us who are cat fanciers, we couldn't have been happier.
Members participating in the fashion show as models were Betty Popp, Sharon Prince, Ethel Shelton, Carol Smith, Suzanne Southwell, Shirley Swadley, Gloria Valdez, and Ruth Waldsmith. Beautiful piano music was provided by Dorothy Peterson. Below, you will see these ladies in beautiful spring and summer outfits from Draper's & Damon's.
Funds raised from this event will be used to support the many organizations and activities that the Woman's Club donates to each year. For more information about becoming a member of the Woman's Club, contact Viola Kelly at 746.4526.

Canyon Day Planned for Mesa College
On Saturday, May 3, from 10am to 2pm, Mesa College of San Diego will launch its first Canyon Day, an annual event when students, faculty, and staff join members of the community to celebrate, educate, help protect and preserve Tecolote Canyon. The free family-friendly event focuses on education and awareness around the issues of conservation of the environment and preservation of the Tecolote Canyon. Activities include workshops, kid-friendly activities, information, booths, and canyon walks.
Canyon Day will open with a traditional Native American blessing by Jane Dumas, a respected tribal elder of the Jamul Band of Kumeyaay Indians. Welcome remarks will be made by Councilmember Donna Frye and Mesa College President Rita M. Cepeda. "Canyon Day and the canyon clean-up preceding it represent the best example of synergy of an idea whose time has come," said Ms. Cepeda. "This is an opportunity for us all to 'think green' and demonstrate how to respect nature and the environment."
This event was preceded by Canyon Clean-up Day in April, which readied the canyon for nature walks to be held during Canyon Day. Participants can choose from a host of activities and workshops, including vendor and information booths. Hands-on activities for children, coordinated by the MET High School students, include arts and crafts with recycled materials, opportunities to create bird feeders with natural materials, and paint a peace mural. Separate canyon walks for children and adults will be led by trained volunteers. For more information, call 619.388.2699 or check the website at
