"Enchanted" Movie Featured for Enchanted Evening

The First United Methodist Church of Escondido invites the public to experience an enchanted evening on Friday, April 18, at 6:30pm, in the Church's Social Hall, 341 So. Kalmia St., Escondido. The movie presentation will be Disney's newest - "Enchanted" - a fairy tale comes to life when Giselle is pushed out of her animated fairy tale to the unmagical world of downtown Manhattan. The Brombies to Perform in Fallbrook

The Brombies, featuring bluegrass music, will perform at 7:30pm, Saturday, April 19, at the Fellowship Hall of the St. Stephen's Lutheran Church, 1636 East Mission Road, Fallbrook. Admission is $15/adults and $7/children, ages 7 to 17.

The performance is part of the Fallbrook Americana Music Series. Tickets are available at Major Market, 845 S. Main, Fallbrook, or at the door the night of the performance. There will be only one performance. For more information, call 760.723.7255.

University Women to Feature Speaker from Project Concern

On Saturday, April 19, starting at 10am, the American Association of University Women will meet at the Escondido Country Club, 1800 Country Club Lane. The speaker will be Cheryl Pia, and her topic "Bringing Health Care to Women in Other Countries." Cheryl is a volunteer with Project Concern International, a non-profit, global health care organization, and will tell of her involvement in a Guatemalan clinic that works to reduce maternal and infant mortality rates.

Conservancy Has Weekend of Outdoor Activities Planned

Wildflower Walk & Potluck Picnic: On Saturday, April 19, from 12Noon to 2pm, at the Del Dios Community Park, off Lake Drive in Escondido, enjoy a potluck picnic and wildflower walk along the shores of Lake Hodges. Learn from Rick Halsey, Director of California Chaparral Institute, how natural plant communities recover from wildfire. Bring your own picnic supplies, water and sun protection. Then on Sunday, April 20, from 1pm to 4:30pm, enjoy a Guided Nature Hike at the Sunset Drive Staging Area, off Via Rancho Parkway, Escondido. Join the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy for a guided hike to the summit of Bernardo Mountain and enjoy spectacular wildflower displays and learn how natural plant communities recover from wildfire. Rick Halsey will again be the guide. Bring water and sun protection for this moderately-strenuous 6-mile hike. Reservations are required. The Bluesbreakers Performing at Poway Center

John Mayall and The Bluesbreakers will perform at a special concert on Saturday, April 19, at 8pm, at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, 15498 Espola Road, Poway. John Mayall is the influential bluesman whose seminal '60s band served as a proving ground for some of rock's most celebrated musicians, including Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce (Cream), Peter Green, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood (Fleetwood Mac) and Mick Taylor (The Rolling Stones). It's no wonder music critics call him "The Godfather of the British Blues."

"April Madness" is Theme for Christian Women's Meeting

When the San Marcos-Vista Christian Women's Connection group meets for lunch on Monday, April 21, the theme will be "April Madness." The meeting starts at 11:30am at the Lake San Marcos Country Club, 1750 San Pablo Drive, LSM.

A special feature will be "Artistic Designs" presented by Michelle Griffith of Carlsbad, showing how to put together a chantilly lace ensemble. "Music is in the Air" as Dee Smith from Murrieta, a professional and inspirational singer, sings special music that will touch the heart. The speaker, Lisa Patterson, from Ontario, will share how life can go from pieces to purpose; overcoming addiction, in "Expectancy in the Air.

The club has no membership or dues. All ladies are invited and encouraged to make reservations before April 17 for the luncheon. Oceanside Optimists Plan Casino Royale Fundraiser

The Casino Royale fundraiser, a Las Vegas-style "Casino Night" is planned by the Oceanside Optimists, and is scheduled for Saturday, April 26, starting at 6pm with cashout at 10pm, at the Oceanside Senior Citizens Center, 455 Country Club Lane, Oceanside. Attendees must be at least 21 years old to enter.

Proceeds will support the Childhood Cancer project and other youth programs. Cost is $30/person, and includes hors d'oeuvres, $100 in chips, dessert, and one drink. In addition, there will be door prizes, silent auctions, raffles, a no-host bar and, of course, Blackjack, Craps, Roulette, and a Texas Hold'um Poker table. Children's Museum Celebrating Earth Day

The Escondido Children's Museum is celebrating Earth Day for the next few weeks, and here's when and how:

April 12 - 10am - Hands on Breakfast. Get to know the Museum; featuring the 2007 California Wildfire Exhibit and appreciation for our fire fighters. Then at 1pm - Earth Day Garden Party. Wear your grubby clothes, tour the garden, plant veggies and eat some too.

April 19 - 1pm - Celebrate Earth Day by creating a natural craft - it's a surprise, but come and be ready to get your hands dirty.

April 26 - 1pm - Experience a fun and funky puppet show featuring Mr. Green Jeans, the "Green" puppet that will educate you on how to recycle, save water, and be a good citizen.

May 3 - 11am - Earth Day Photo Shoot - a great opportunity for 15 4th and 5th graders to learn digital photography from local professional photographers. This class will teach children how to creatively appreciate the earth through the eye of the camera. Must register to participate - first come, first served. Call the Museum at 760.233.7755.

May 10 - 12Noon - La Milpa Organica Farms will be at the Museum to teach you organic gardening. They will bring tasty veggies from their organic farm in North County. At 1pm - Celebrate May Day by dancing around the May pole, make a May basket, and decorate a spring-themed cupcake.

New Members Welcomed Into Local Chapter of DAR

The Rincon Del Diablo Chapter of Daughters of American Revolution (DAR) welcomed new members at a recent meeting. These women have been able to trace their lineage back to a patriot of the Revolutionary Way, which is a requirement for membership.

DAR is open to women who can demonstrate ancestral active service in the cause for American independence, either by serving in military or some other significant role. Those interested in joining can receive help from the chapter in researching their lineage. They meet in Escondido, and have members from San Marcos, Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Valley Center, Temecula, Ramona, and Julian. Programs are on historical or patriotic topics. Beta Sigma Phi's to Celebrate Founder's Day

On Saturday, April 26, the Hidden Valley Vista Council of Beta Sigma Phi International will celebrate Founder's Day with a theme of "Sing it Loud! A Symphony On Parade." The event will start at 10am in the Mountain Room of the Escondido Country Club, 1800 Country Club Lane, Escondido. Cost is $21/person.

The Council will be conferring Ritual of Jewels, Order of the Rose, and Golden Circle rituals and installing new officers for the coming year. Rancho Buena Vista Adobe To Celebrate Earth Day


The City of Vista invites garden lovers and nature enthusiasts to explore the Rancho Buena Vista Adobe’s lush landscape on Saturday, April 26, 10am to 12:30pm, at 640 Alta Vista Drive, for the first annual Earth Day Celebration.

Ivy Bodin, Rancho garden docent, will provide a tour of over 100 heritage and modern roses that he planted and nurtured on the Rancho grounds. His guide, Rancho Roses, will be free to Earth Day guests. Bodin has identified all of the rose varieties growing throughout the property including the famous Rosa Laevigata (Cherokee rose), which dates back to the 1850s.

Learn about Calendula, 2008 "Herb of the Year," from Karen England of Edgehill Herb Farm. Calendula is a cheerful herb, easy to grow and a perfect addition to flower gardens and vegetable or herb gardens. Tami Noorzay, Adobe Days instructor, will talk about Native American plant uses; common plants growing at the Adobe that have been used for food and medicines for centuries. The San Diego Native Plant Garden will be open for a self-guided tour using the free plant identification guide. And meet Jesus Orea, the Rancho's official gardener, who grooms the landscape.

Junior Earth Day guests will receive a free Rancho Earth Day activity guide which includes information about making adobe bricks. Adobe has been an earth friendly building material since. . . well, forever! Gardening and information about going green will also be available.

The Rancho Buena Vista Adobe, part of an historic 1845 Alta California land grant, is one of the best preserved of the San Diego county ranchos.
