The Insurance Claims Adjuster Is Not Your Friend
If you have losses covered by insurance, the insurance company will send a claims adjuster to determine the cost of your losses. Your friendly insurance agent who sold you the policy has disappeared. Your friendly insurance agent who increases your coverage and premium each year with a friendly evaluation of your property value will not be available to help you with your claims.
The adjuster will tell you he or she is independent and will make a fair adjustment for you. They will tell you they are experts and will make a fair evaluation for you. Who pays the adjuster? He or she knows they will deal with you only once in their lives, but the adjuster's income depends on the insurance company.
You need someone on your side. An attorney who specializes in insurance claims can be of great help. You may call the North County Bar at (760) 758-4755. They will refer you to a local attorney who specializes in insurance claims. The attorney will provide a free 30 minute consultation and maybe more. Many North County attorneys will provide additional free service for you in these circumstances. All attorneys provide pro bono (no cost) service each year as a service to the community and the California State Bar.
You may also need help in working with a contractor for repairs or rebuilding. Again, you can call the North County Bar, or you may contact my office, John Smylie at (760) 727-4248, email firstname.lastname@example.org, web page smylielaw.com.
