Twin Oaks Golf Course Hosts Young Adventurers
About a dozen Young Adventurers were given some pointers in how to play the gentlemanly game of golf last week by some folks who know a bit about the game. There was the driving range where they learned how to hit the long ball, the chip shots, the putting course where they learned how to handle the more intricate elements of the game . . . and there were pep talks, about how they could learn this game and excel at it if they simply tried.
Two of the older kids were receiving just such a stern lecture on how they could make something of themselves by Jim Dokas. “Do the best you can,” he said. “Always.”
Later, Francisco and Antonio were told who their mentor was. Jim Dokas, former pitcher for the Boston Red Sox, and who had pitched to Ted Williams. “Wow!” said the boys. Lesson learned.
Twin Oaks Golf Course is owned by the JC Corporation which owns or runs a number of golf courses. At least once each year, as a community service, they arrange for golf pros and members of their clubs to teach youth groups the fundamentals of golf.
This year The Young Adventurers, a youth diversion program serving North San Diego County, were guests. By all accounts, the kids had a great time and some may actually pursue the sport. Those interested in getting involved with The Young Adventurers should call Lynn Murphy at 760.798.2614.
