Scholarships Presented by Kiwanis Club of Lake San Marcos
Each year the Lake San Marcos Kiwanis Club, through their Foundation, presents scholarships to deserving young people from the San Marcos area. John and Charlene Smylie were guests and recognized for their foundation being a significant contributor to the LSM Kiwanis Foundation. This year ten scholarships were presented; four for $400 to 2-year students who are continuing their education at Palomar College or transferring from a junior college to a 4-year college, and six for $1,000 for students who are going to a 4-year college. Scores for selecting scholarship winners were based on academics, need and school/community activities, and applications were analyzed to determine that the courses selected were appropriate to achieve the goal set by the applicant.
The $400 scholarship winners were Rebecca Albright, a math major, studying to be a math teacher; LaMont Little, a psychology major; Susan Navo, business administration major; and Ashley Johnson, majoring in business marketing and Spanish. The $1,000 winners were Theresa Antonellis who is transferring to Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts; Liz at San Francisco State; Frank McArthur, a history major who interned with a congressman; Brandon Ro, who will become an architect at Cal Poly Pomona; Elizabeth Wood who will study nursing; and Alex Johnson who is an Eagle Scout, Phi Beta Kappa, was on the high school football team that won the state championship in North Dakota, then was paralyzed in an accident and now spends his time in a wheelchair, and who is planning to attend USC or UCLA.

Downtown Business Association Lights Up Downtown
The alley lighting project is shining brightly as the first test light went up on the new Savannah Design building at 130 E. Grand. Once this has been determined to be the appropriate light, more will be ordered with the goal of having them installed within the next four to five weeks. Money was raised for these efforts through the DBA annual dinner and a generous donation from SDG&E.
Also, the DBA is taking control of the monthly 2nd Saturday Art Walk held downtown. The event was originally organized by the Escondido Arts Partnership, and promotes the arts in Escondido on the second Saturday of each month. The next event will be Saturday, May 12. Everything will be "Bloomin'" in downtown Escondido; art gallery shows, wine tastings, restaurant specials, and retailer delights.
And another project of the DBA: The SDG&E invites you to an energy-efficient light bulb exchange to help reduce energy costs by exchanging your old halogen torchiere floor lamps (bring entire lamp, limit two) and your 75 watts or higher incandescent bulbs (limit five) for new energy-efficient models for free. Offer is based on a one-for-one exchange. This event will be Saturday, May 12, from 10am to 2pm, at the parking lot of the California Center for the Arts, Escondido. You must present a valid California driver's license or ID and a copy of your SDG&E bill to participate. Lighting exchange is limited to five light bulbs and two torchiere floor lamps per household per year from the date last received.

Saturday, April 28, from 10am to 12Noon, at the Joslyn Senior Center Auditorium, 210 Park Avenue, Escondido, a public forum has been scheduled by The League of Women Voters of Escondido and Neighboring Communities to hear guest speaker Jim Bell. He will present his innovative solutions for improving San Diego County's economy by becoming renewable energy self-sufficient as the first step to becoming water and food self-sufficient as well. Mr. Bell has more than 40 years experience in the design and construction industry. He has served as ecological designer for a life-support-friendly hotel for Terra Vista Management and the recently completed Ocean Beach People's Food Cooperative's new "green" store. He is an Author, Activist, and International recognized expert on life-support sustaining development.
Andrea Bell to Speak at Association of University Women Meeting

She will share her experiences and give the processes of writing a memoir.
