Schedules Major Fund Raiser for “Field of Dreams”

Athletics will be the focus on April 14th as CSUSM holds the university’s Spring fundraising event.

The theme of the event is, “Field of Dreams: They’re Here, Let’s Build!”

The night of dinner and dancing will raise much-needed funds toward the construction of on-campus facilities for the baseball, softball, and soccer programs, and for scholarships for all the teams.

A volunteer committee, University Advancement and the Athletic Department staff are working very hard to make the night a great success.

As plans progress, The Paper has agreed to provide its readers with updated information.

Palomar College Television partners with City of Escondido

Starting this month, a partnership between Palomar College Television (PCTV) and the City of Escondido is bringing six of the college’s award-winning television programs into the prime time slot for local viewers hooked up to Escondido’s cable channel 19.

According to PCTV Producer Bill Wisneski, “Our programs are now accessible to more Palomar College students and other Escondido residents. With this partnership, the shows now air from 6 – 9 p.m. Thursdays on channel 19, in addition to airing on our PCTV cable channel 16 from 9 p.m. - 10 a.m. daily.”

Pat Schwerdtfeger, Palomar’s dean of arts, media, business and computing systems, said, “We are very excited about building a relationship with the City of Escondido. This partnership will allow us to share educational content with our students and with the citizens of Escondido. Furthermore, we hope to find ways to allow our Radio and Television students to work on projects that will eventually be broadcast throughout North County. We hope in the not to distant future to form partnerships with other cities as well. The City of Escondido and Palomar College can work together to bring educational and community programming to the people of North County.”

The Palomar College programs currently included in this partnership are Contemporary Legal Issues, Counseling 120: Quest for Identity, Life Skills, Digital Imaging with Photoshop, Chemistry: The Universal Connection, College Success Skills, and Palomar Concert Hour.

“The three hour block will also include spots we have created to promote courses, academic departments, and campus events,” Wisneski said, adding that PCTV and the City of Escondido plan to expand the programming in the future.

Escondido City Council To Hear Plea for Library

In a planning session designed to finalize a presentation to be made to the Escondido City Council on February 28th at 7pm a Citizens Task Force for a New Library convenened at a Love Your Library event last week. Stung by a defeat at the polls on Proposition 81 in the June election, the Task Force sought to find suggestions to present to the Council.

Proposition 81 would have provided up to $600 million in bonds to fund new public library construction in the state.

Library supporters, including Alex Galenes, chairman of the task force, and former Mayor Jim Rady, all agree that the library needs more space to provide for 140,000 people it is trying to serve from a building that was built in 1981 when the population was only 64,000.

The First Retrospective of Renowned American Watercolor Artists, Frederic Whitaker and Eileen Monaghan Whitaker

The California Center for the Arts, Escondido Museum will feature, Translucent Visions: Frederic Whitaker & Eileen Monaghan Whitaker | A Retrospective in Watercolor, a comprehensive exhibition examining the variety of subjects explored by watercolor artists, Frederic Whitaker and Eileen Monaghan Whitaker. The exhibition is the first retrospective for this husband and wife duo, now deceased, as well as the first time they will be exhibited side by side in over 32 years.

The exhibition will run from March 3 to July 4, 2007, and will include more than 150 works. Featured will be landscapes and cityscapes painted before their move to California in 1965, as well as views of San Diego they painted during the years they resided in La Jolla. Additional subjects that form chapters within their collective narrative forged over a half century are animal studies, figurative genre, fruit and floral still-lifes, and the inspired imagery of Latin America.

Masters of this popular American medium, the Whitaker name has become synonymous with watercolor painting. Translucent Visions is a tribute to the quality and diversity of this remarkable couple’s artistic production.
