Why Should We Have an Annual Exam for our Pets

Why Should We Have an Annual Exam for our Pets?

Visits of healthy pets to the doctor usually occur during the time when our dog or cat is “due for vaccinations.”

I strongly recommend a periodic “checkup” of our pets.  During examination I am able to compare last year’s weight with today’s.  Many diseases manifest themselves by gaining or losing weight, so it is quite important to monitor it yearly.   Before we give routine vaccinations we like to take the temperature and be sure that the pet does not have a fever; this could be the sign of infection and problems.

The next step of the examination is the ears and eyes.  Detection of early ear infection may really prevent struggling with chronic problems in the future.  I always look inside the mouth - checking for trouble with teeth, gums, and tongue.  Very often the owner does not recognize dental disease, treatment of which is very important for overall health.  A clean mouth makes our pets stronger and healthier.

During the examination I concentrate on skin appearance and plans for flea prevention.

Ascultation of the heart is quite important for diagnosing heart and lung problems.  We recommend during the yearly checkup a microscopic examination of stool.  Many parasites will not be seen by the owner’s eye and could cause problems.  I hope these few points will explain the need for your pet to be seen yearly by the doctor.
